Sending inventory into Amazon FBA is smoother when products are prepared carefully before they leave your warehouse partner. This guide walks through the practical preparation work Amazon sellers commonly need: receiving and inspection, barcode and FNSKU labelling, packaging and poly bagging where required, bundling where applicable, carton and shipment preparation, and the preparation mistakes that most often slow inbound receiving.

OZ Prep Services supports Amazon sellers with FBA prep services, FNSKU labelling, and FBA prep with 3PL support. The steps below describe the preparation workflow itself so you can plan inventory handovers clearly.

1. Receive and Inspect Inventory First

Preparation should start with receiving. Before labels or packaging are applied, inventory needs to be checked against what you expected to send:

  • Confirm carton and unit counts
  • Look for transit damage, crushed packaging or open units
  • Note mixed SKUs that arrived together and need separating
  • Flag units that are incomplete, soiled or otherwise unsuitable to continue

Catching issues at receiving reduces the chance that damaged or incorrect stock is labelled and packed as if it were ready for Amazon. OZ Prep Services can include product receiving and inspection as part of FBA preparation.

2. Apply Barcode and FNSKU Labelling Correctly

Amazon FBA inventory is tracked with seller-specific barcodes. For many shipments that means applying an FNSKU label so Amazon can identify your units inside its network.

Practical labelling checks include:

  • Printing clear, scannable FNSKU or barcode labels
  • Placing labels on a flat, visible surface of each unit
  • Covering manufacturer barcodes when required so the wrong code is not scanned
  • Checking that bundles or multipacks use the correct label for that sellable unit

Missing, wrinkled or poorly placed labels are a common reason inventory is delayed or needs rework. For labelling-focused work, see our FNSKU labelling service in Australia.

3. Package and Protect Products

Some products need additional packaging before they are ready for an FBA inbound shipment. Depending on the item, preparation can include:

  • Outer packaging or repackaging for loose or fragile units
  • Protective materials such as bubble wrap where the product needs cushioning
  • Clean, sealed presentation so units survive handling between facilities

The goal is practical protection and consistent unit presentation—not decorative packaging. Packaging needs vary by product type, so preparation instructions should match what you are actually shipping.

4. Use Poly Bagging Where It Applies

Poly bagging is used when a product needs a clear sealed bag for handling or protection. Where poly bags are used, sellers typically need to:

  • Use a bag that fits the product cleanly
  • Seal the bag so the unit stays protected
  • Keep labels scannable through or on the bag as required for that shipment
  • Add any required warning labels that apply to the bag size or product type

Not every product needs poly bagging. Apply it when the product type or your shipment plan calls for it, rather than treating it as a default for every SKU.

5. Bundle or Kit Units When That Is Your Sellable Offer

If you sell multipacks or bundled offers, preparation must create the sellable unit Amazon will receive—not a loose collection of separate items.

Bundling and kitting preparation can include:

  • Grouping the correct companion products or multipack quantities
  • Securing the bundle so it stays together in transit
  • Labelling the finished bundle as one unit
  • Checking that the bundle contents match the listing you intend to replenish

OZ Prep Services can support bundling and kitting as part of Amazon FBA preparation when those steps are part of your inbound plan.

6. Prepare Cartons and the Outbound Shipment

After units are prepared, inventory still needs orderly carton and shipment preparation before it leaves for Amazon:

  • Group prepared units by shipment plan
  • Pack cartons securely without crushing units
  • Apply the correct carton labels for the shipment
  • Keep carton contents consistent with what the shipment expects
  • Stage cartons for carrier pickup or dispatch

Good unit prep can still fail inbound if carton labelling or shipment grouping is incomplete. Treat shipment preparation as the final preparation stage, not an afterthought.

Common Preparation Errors to Avoid

These issues show up repeatedly when inventory is prepared too quickly or without a checklist:

  • Skipping inspection — damaged or wrong units get labelled as ready stock
  • Unreadable or missing FNSKU labels — wrinkled, partial or absent barcodes slow receiving
  • Manufacturer barcodes left exposed — scanners may read the wrong code
  • Wrong label on a bundle — multipacks labelled as single units (or the reverse)
  • Inconsistent packaging — some units protected, others loose in the same carton
  • Mixed SKUs without clear separation — cartons that are hard to reconcile against the shipment plan
  • Incomplete carton labelling — prepared units packed into cartons that are not shipment-ready

A short pre-dispatch check against your shipment plan prevents many of these problems.

How OZ Prep Services Fits This Workflow

If you prefer not to handle preparation in-house, OZ Prep Services can support the physical steps described above as part of Amazon FBA prep—including receiving and inspection, FNSKU and barcode labelling, packaging, poly bagging where applicable, bundling or kitting where applicable, and shipment preparation. Storage can also be combined with prep when inventory needs to be held before an Amazon shipment is ready.
